The Department of Water Resources released the following statement from Director Karla Nemeth on the withdrawal of the Temporary Urgency Change Petition on January 19, 2022:
“The series of strong December storms provided California with a much-needed boost in rain and snow. While it hasn’t ended our state’s severe drought, it has provided some relief. With that in mind, the Department of Water Resources, along with our federal partners at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation have withdrawn the application for a Temporary Urgency Change Petition (TUCP) submitted to the State Water Resources Control Board on December 1, 2021.
The petition would have allowed for the State Water Project and the Central Valley Project to operate under modifications to the water quality and water right permit requirements in the Delta from February 1 through April 2022.
The December storms have provided enough storage into Lake Oroville and other parts of the system, that a modification of those Delta requirements is no longer needed. The Department believes it has enough water in the system to operator to the traditional requirements through the spring.
Water managers will continue to monitor the hydrology throughout the winter and early spring to determine if a TUCP may be needed for operations this summer.”
