Tribal Engagement in Integrated Regional Water Management

Tribal engagement is an important component of every major project led by the State of California, providing an opportunity for government-to-government consultation, and collaboration and coordination between Tribal leaders and project proponents. Guided by the Governor’s Executive Order B-10-11, the Department of Water Resources’ (DWR) Tribal Engagement Policy, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and state policies regarding consultation with California Native American Tribes, the Integrated Regional Water Management (IRWM) process includes significant Tribal engagement.

DWR is committed to a robust, collaborative, and transparent Tribal engagement process that provides for meaningful information sharing and opportunities for input.

Tribes can apply for DWR grants by visiting the Department's Grants and Loans webpage or browsing DWR's postings on the California Grants Portal. For active grant solicitations, visit the following grant program pages:

IRWM Tribal Webinar Series 2020

In 2020, DWR and the Integrated Regional Water program organized a series of webinars, bringing together Tribal leaders, Tribal water management practitioners, and DWR program staff to support Tribal participation in regional water management. Attendees learned about statewide IRWM programs and objectives, and shared experience engaging in the IRWM process. Through discussion, participants identified key challenges in Tribal participation, best practices, and ways DWR can improve its programs to better serve Tribes.

The information shared during the Tribal Webinar Series is available below and contains lessons and resources that may be helpful to anyone who could not attend. If you want to learn more about Tribal participation in IRWM or want to be involved in future discussions, please subscribe to DWR’s Tribal List Serve and select "DWR CWP TRIBAL COMMUNICATION."
