Earth Day 2022

Flyer LinkJoin us this April for events celebrating the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day!

April 22, 2022 marked the 52nd anniversary of the first Earth Day, which is credited with launching the modern environmental movement, and is now recognized as the planet’s largest civic event. This past Earth Day's theme was Invest in Our Planet. Now more than ever, we must invest time, energy, and resources into the stewardship of our natural, cultural, and historic resources, while advancing climate action throughout our state.

Earth Day aims to educate and mobilize more than one billion people around the globe to grow and support the next generation of environmental activists. There’s so much we all can do to help protect and restore our planet, and it is our hope that these events will encourage each of you to join in, celebrate our beautiful planet and work together toward a more resilient future that we all can be proud of.

Check out last year's events that focused on California’s global leadership in building climate resilience through policies, programs, and partnerships that also increase equity, improve public health, and create economic opportunity.

Orphan Wells Webinar

April 27 at 10:00 a.m. PST

We invite you to join a discussion with U.S. Senator Alex Padilla and the Secretary of Natural Resources Wade Crowfoot on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Approximately 5,300 orphan, deserted, and potentially deserted wells are documented in California. These wells are idle, non-producing oil and gas wells with no responsible, solvent owner. Left un-remediated, orphan wells and facilities can contaminate waterways and soil, serve as a source of climate and air pollutants, and present physical hazards to people and wildlife. With greater investments for proper sealing and closure of these wells, California can reduce the number of orphan wells, improve public safety and health, and move us closer toward our climate change goals. The new investments in the proper plugging and sealing of orphan wells would also provide employment opportunities for workers exiting the oil and gas industry. The two leaders will discuss federal and state investments that will expand efforts to address orphan oil and gas wells and improve the public safety and health of communities across California. Register here.
