Water Energy Grant Program

The Water-Energy Grant Program provides funds to implement water efficiency programs or projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce water and energy use.

There are no open solicitations at this time. Projects funded in the 2014 and 2016 solicitations are in progress.

In 2014 and 2016 we funded these types of programs/projects:

  • Commercial Water Efficiency or Institutional Water Efficiency Programs
  • Residential Water Efficiency Programs that benefit Disadvantaged Communities
  • Projects that reduce greenhouse gas, reduce water and reduce energy use
  • Only projects with water conservation measures that also save energy

Benefits of the Water-Energy Grant Program projects reported through 2018

*Estimates capture each device’s lifetime savings/reductions installed through 2018. For example, for a device with an average 10-year lifespan, the above estimate includes the calculated benefits through that 10-year period.

 2016 Grants

The Department of Water Resources awarded $17.72 million from the 2016 Water-Energy solicitation to 14 projects that will save water and energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The remaining funding will be used to measure the actual water-energy savings from the projects.

The Water-Energy Grant Program is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment—particularly in disadvantaged communities. The cap-and-trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution. California Climate Investment projects include affordable housing, renewable energy, public transportation, zero-emission vehicles, environmental restoration, more sustainable agriculture, recycling and much more. At least 35 percent of these investments are made in disadvantaged and low-income communities. Visit California Climate Investments for more information.
