2017 Storm Rehabilitation Projects

Atmospheric river storms in January and February 2017 caused flooding in the Central Valley and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. These storms put additional pressure on Central Valley flood control systems, pressure that continued into the spring and early summer months due to the melting of snowpack in the Sierras. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) and its State partners implemented immediate actions to reduce flood risk and respond to the situation. We are providing emergency assistance to Local Maintaining Agencies (LMAs), and rehabilitation repairs are underway. This work is being conducted along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) PL 84-99 rehabilitation program.

Reported Damaged Sites

To understand the impacts of the storms and to prioritize repairs, USACE requested reports of flood damages from PL 84-99 Active LMAs on the Sacramento and San Joaquin River systems and in the Delta. More than 500 sites were reported to be damaged as a result of the flooding, based on LMA coordination reporting, emergency response data, and DWR program information. These sites have been field-reviewed by DWR or determined priority sites from USACE. USACE reports for the San Joaquin and Delta areas are not yet fully ranked due to longer lasting high flood waters. All numbers are subject to change.
