Water Year 2019: Feast of Famine?

Starting during California’s 2007-09 drought, DWR meets with the research community each fall to explore the potential for developing better long-term forecasts of California’s winter precipitation.

For the tenth annual meeting, DWR is holding a workshop with the Water Education Foundation, which will discuss state-of-the-art long-range, predictive weather forecasting; ongoing work to improve forecasting at lead times of weeks to months; and prospects for Water Year 2019.

Water Year 2018 marked a return to dry conditions statewide following an exceptionally wet 2017. However, all but two of the water years in the decade prior to 2017 were drought years.  Was Water Year 2018 simply a single dry year or does it signal the a returned to prolonged dry conditions?

The event is sponsored by DWR and Water Education Foundation, in partnership with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
