CWO '02 Field Trips and Tours: Sunday,
October 27 is chock-full of fantastic field trip and tour opportunities! In
addition, we have added another Anacapa Island trip on Thursday, October 31.
Below you will find descriptions of nine half- or full-day trips designed for
CWO '02 attendees. For questions about the specific field trips or tours, please
see "more information" under each description or contact Field Trip and Tour

To register for field trips and tours: You
may register for field trips and tours at the same time you register for the
conference. Registrants must check in at the CWO '02 Field Trip Desk
on Sunday, October 27 for registration and boarding passes. Payment for field
trips and tours may accompany payment of conference registration fees and can
be made by credit card, check, money order, or approved government or corporation
purchase authorization payable to CWO '02. See the Field

Anacapa Island & Marine Reserves : Ride out from Santa
Barbara Harbor to the Channel Islands on the Patrol Boat Swordfish,
a 58-foot aluminum catamaran used by the Department of Fish and Game for marine
enforcement. Anacapa Island is located 14 miles off the coast from Ventura.
Once on Anacapa, enjoy lunch and an island hike. If time allows, this trip
may include an additional stop on the east end of Santa Cruz Island. Gary
Davis, Chief Scientist with the Channel Islands National Park, will be on
hand to discuss the habitat and conditions on the islands as well as marine
reserves. Visit an existing marine reserve at Anacapa Island, tour a proposed
reserve site, and hear about the process of proposing and establishing a marine
reserve in this beautiful national park and the Channel Islands National Marine
Sanctuary.

- Tour Fee: $23, includes lunch on Anacapa Island.

- Location: Depart from Hotel Lobby.
- ADA Accessibility: no, tour includes hike on the island and moving from
the catamaran to the smaller shuttle skiffs to get onto the Island.

to the island hike, you will be required to move on potentially wet surfaces
to transfer from the catamaran to the skiff.

- Arroyo Burro Watershed
: Participants will visit the South Coast Watershed Resources Center at
Arroyo Burro Beach. The Center was established by the Community Environmental
Council as well as the City and County of Santa Barbara. Join this field trip
for a hands-on overview of the Arroyo Burro Creek watershed, pollution/land
use issues, and coastal geology. The tour ends at Arroyo Burro beach ("Hendry's"
as the locals call it) to view a number of restoration sites and the Watershed
Resources Center.

- Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park
: First enjoy a picnic lunch in the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature
Park. The Salt Marsh, also known as El Estuaro, is one of the most important
wetlands in Southern California. After lunch, Nature Park docents will lead
you through this beautiful, relatively unspoiled estuary that is home to rare
and endangered plants and birds. A haven for migrating birds, the estuary
is the foundation for much of the local food chain, as well as a nursery for
marine fish. The estuary totals 230 acres, 120 of which is owned by University
of California, Santa Barbara as the Salt Marsh Reserve. The remainder is the
Salt Marsh Nature Park, which is owned and operated by the City of Carpinteria.

- Coal Oil Point Reserve & UCSB Marine
Science Institute Lab : Visit one of the best remaining examples
of a coastal-strand environment in Southern California. Doctor Cristina Sandoval,
Reserve Director, will lead the tour of Coal Oil Point, home of the endangered
snowy plover. The Reserve protects a wide variety of coastal and estuarine
habitats. Largely undisturbed coastal dunes support a rich assemblage of dune
vegetation, while older and more stable backdunes are covered with southern
coastal scrub habitat. As a second stop, participants will get a behind-the-scenes
look at the UC Santa Barbara Marine Science Institute lab as given by the
Director, Doctor Steven Gaines. The Marine Science Institute is a world leader
in ocean research.

- Shoreline Kayaking :
A guided harbor tour by ocean kayak is a wonderful way to discover Santa Barbara
from the sea. The Santa Barbara Harbor Tour provides a perfect introduction
to kayaking and is ideal for the whole family. A fun and easy (1€ to 2 hour)
paddle winds through the beautiful Santa Barbara Harbor, under historic Stearns
Wharf, and out to the € mile buoy. Along the way, watch sea lions, harbor
seals, dolphins, and the many sea birds that live along the coast. The professional
and learned guides expound on the natural history of Santa Barbara and its
environs. Bring lunch money and enjoy your noon meal at the harbor store.

- Tour Fee: $45. Rental includes kayak and life jackets.

- Sport Fishing : Join
this open party fishing trip on the 65-foot Stardust. Experience excellent
customer service from a great crew and captain and learn new techniques. Enjoy
the spacious galley/snackbar and don't forget to take pleasure in enjoying
the sundeck. Staff from the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary will
be on hand to help you identify the sights and sounds you may encounter on
the trip.
- Date & Time: Sunday, October 27. 12:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
- Tour Fee: $32. $25 for children 12 and under. You can
also buy a "tackle package" that includes one-day license and tackle for
$9 for sale on boat.

Landing in the Santa Barbara Harbor. The Field Trip registration desk

- Santa Ynez Valley Winery Tour
: Travel to the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley and tour three charming
wineries. The tour will begin at Gainey Vineyard with a private tour and eight
wines to taste. Travel on to the Foley Estates Vineyard and Winery for tasting,
a souvenir glass, and picnic lunch on the winery grounds with an acclaimed
view of the valley. Finally, visit the Fess Parker Vineyard for tastings and
a private tour by Mr. Fess Parker.

- Tour Fee: $35, includes lunch, tastings, private tours,
and a souvenir glass.

- World's Most Spectacular Seeps!
: Take a crew boat tour of the huge natural seeps that release
oil and gas into the Santa Barbara Channel leaving behind the tar that ends
up on local beaches. Ancient earthquakes, produced fractures and cracks in
the brittle rock beneath the ocean floor, which, together with high, subterranean
pressure, allows for the natural seepage of oil and gas. The California State
Lands Commission has charted more than 1,200 natural seeps in the Santa Barbara
Channel. More than half of these occur within three miles of Coal Oil Point.

- Cabrillo High School Aquarium : This unique
aquarium is run entirely by high school students.
- Fairview Gardens Tours & Tastings : The farm,
founded in 1895 in Goleta, is considered by some to be the oldest organic
farm in southern California.
- El Presidio State Historic Park : Visit the
oldest building in Santa Barbara and the second oldest in California. El Cuartel,
the oldest existing building in Santa Barbara, is all that remains of the
last of four Royal Presidios (Spanish military outposts) built in Alta California.
- Geology Walk : Join a local geologist on a tour
of the amazing features found right along Arroyo Burro Beach. Look for fossils,
folds and fault lines as you stroll down the beach below the Douglas Family
Preserve.
- Mission Tour : There are four amazing missions
within a short drive of the Santa Barbara area. Have some extra time? Pick
your favorite or visit all four!
- Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens : Sixty-five
acres and over five miles of paths meander through an unrivaled collection
of California flora and offer panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel
Islands.
- Santa Barbara Maritime Museum : Visit the Santa
Barbara area's newest member of the museum community. Formerly known as the
Old Naval Reserve Center and used as a U.S. Navy training facility from 1942
until 1995, the structure has been renovated and officially opened its doors
to the public in 2000.
- Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History :
Set in historic Mission Canyon, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
is one of the most beautiful small museums in the United States by virtue
of its natural setting and gracious Spanish-style architecture.
- Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens : Walk from Fess
Parker's Doubletree Resort to this amazing non-profit zoo. The Santa Barbara
Zoo is dedicated to preservation, conservation, and enhancement of the natural
world and its living treasures through education, research, and recreation.
