Join Conference Co-chairs Mary D. Nichols, California's secretary for resources, and Winston H. Hickox, California's secretary for environmental protection, and Honorary Conference Chair Orville T. Magoon, president of the Coastal Zone Foundation, as they officially open California and the World Ocean '02. Not since the creation of the Strattan Commission in the 1960's has so much attention been focused on national approaches to how we protect, manage and use ocean and coastal resources. The future of ocean governance in this nation is now unfolding through the work of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the Pew Oceans Commission. We are proud to host the Honorable Leon E. Panetta, chair of the Pew Oceans Commission, and Mr. William D. Ruckelshaus, chair of the Ocean Governance Committee of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, in this luncheon session. These national leaders will describe the work of the two commissions and share their visions for the future of ocean governance. The session will be moderated by Mr. Tony MacDonald, executive director of the Coastal States Organization.

Plan to join Lawrence B. Coleman, vice provost for research at the University of California, as he kicks off the Poster Session adjacent to the Exhibit Hall. This is your opportunity to enjoy hors d'oeuvres in a causal setting while speaking one-on-one with researchers addressing everything from coastal watershed protection to the mysteries and intrigue of the deep ocean. Vice Provost Coleman will briefly share his thoughts on the role of researchers in ocean and coastal resource management and the relevance of research to the objectives of higher education. Exhibitors invite you to stop by and meet them informally, to learn more about their services and products, and discuss the latest technologies.

October 2002 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Clean Water Act and Coastal Zone Management Act, two landmarks in protecting our nation's coastal resources and water quality. It is time to reflect and celebrate under the stars in the "Plaza del Sol," with dinner, presentations, guest music artists and dancing! The managers of California's Coastal Zone Management Program, Executive Director Peter Douglas of the California Coastal Commission, Executive Director Will Travis of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, and Executive Officer Sam Schuchat, of the California Coastal Conservancy, will join Peter S. Silva, vice chair of the State Water Resources Control Board, in our celebration of achievements made under these important acts as well as challenges for the future. The event will also honor the legacy of Robert Knecht, the first director of the U.S. Coastal Zone Management Program, and the ongoing work of Dr. Biliana Cicin-Sain, director of the Center for the Study of Marine Policy at the University of Delaware. Dr. Cicin-Sain will reflect on the long-standing commitment she and her late husband made to studying and improving the management of coastal resources and water quality. Tropical dinner attire is recommended for this event.
