The California Coastal Coalition (CalCoast), a sponsor of the "A Look at the Beaches" track, is holding its Annual Meeting concurrent with CWO '02. CalCoast members and the public are encouraged to attend the organization's Board of Director's meeting on Monday, October 28 at 8:00 p.m. CalCoast is a non-profit advocacy group comprised of 34 coastal cities; seven counties; AMBAG, BEACON, SANDAG and SCAG; along with business associations and allied groups committed to restoring California's shoreline through sand replenishment, increasing the flow of natural sediment, wetlands recovery and improved water quality. CalCoast was the co-sponsor, with the California Shore and Beach Preservation Association, of AB 64 (Ducheny), which created the California Public Beach Restoration Program. CalCoast has also helped gain passage of important wetlands and water quality legislation, as well as Propositions 12, 13 and 40. For more information, contact Executive Director Steve Aceti at 760.944.3564, or visit the CalCoast website at www.calcoast.org.

The Sea Grant Association (SGA) is holding its Fall 2002 business meeting in conjunction with CW0 '02. The SGA, a not-for-profit organization, represents the combined capabilities of 30 university-based Sea Grant College Programs representing over 300 academic and research institutions nationwide that participate in the NOAA National Sea Grant College Program. The mission of the Sea Grant Program is to maximize the economic, environmental, and social potential of our nation's coastal, marine, and Great Lakes resources through integrated programs of scientific research, education and training, and extension and technical assistance. Sea Grant is "Science Serving America's Coasts." Recent SGA activities include working with the U.S. Congress on the passage of National Sea Grant College Program reauthorization legislation, providing oral and written testimony to both the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the Pew Oceans Commission, and commenting on the draft recommendations resulting from the recent NOAA Program Review. Sea Grant Graduate Researcher Symposium and Poster Presentation. A remarkable pool of talented graduate researchers, who are supported by the California Sea Grant Programs, conduct research to provide the science-based foundation so important to the sustainable use and management of our coastal and marine resources. Under the guidance of expert scientists at colleges and universities throughout California, these trainees work to find answers and solutions to many of the complex problems facing our oceans and estuaries today. More than 1,200 students have been involved in the California Sea Grant Trainee Programs since their inception in 1968. After completing either masters or doctoral degrees, these trainees often become California's next generation of scientists, engineers, and resources managers. California and the World Ocean '02 is aimed at encouraging the exchange of information and views on protecting and managing California's ocean and coastal resources, and will provide an excellent opportunity for young researchers to network and share their scientific discoveries with a broad spectrum of people interested in our oceans. To accomplish this, the California Sea Grant College Program, in partnership with the University of Southern California Sea Grant Program, will be hosting a special Sea Grant Graduate Researcher Symposium and Poster Presentation at CWO '02. The Sea Grant Symposium is scheduled for Monday afternoon, October 28, 2002 from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. This will be followed by a poster reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., concurrent with the CWO '02 reception and poster session, and conclude with judging and awards for the three best presentations and posters.
